Community networks have emerged as an increasingly powerful means to providing affordable access — particularly for rural communities — and are an important strategy for governments to consider as part of a policy framework to achieve universal access. In fact, the 2019 Affordability Report by the Alliance for Affordable Internet shows that competitive broadband markets alone won’t reach everyone — that’s why public access options like free Wi-Fi and alternative models like community networks are crucial to ensure no one is shut out of the digital revolution.
